A few beasts in detail
Dragons
Among the many mythical beasts of the Middle Ages, there is probably none as well known as the European Dragon. Most European Dragons would be described as "evil" and are usually the enemies of heroes in Middle Age tales or legends. European Dragons have also been known to horde gold and riches in their caves. A typical European Dragon would be the size of several men and covered in scales from head to toe. All European Dragons have long tails and huge wings. They have four legs and horns like the devil to show that they're evil. Most dragons can breath fire, though there are several different variations of it's breath. |
Unicorns Every little girl wants one of these. A unicorn was often described as a pure white horse with a golden horn on it's head. Because of it's white mane, unicorns were often known as a symbol of purity and grace. Unicorns were in fact the opposite of a dragon, which was a symbol of evil and destruction. In legends, the unicorn's horns were able to cure any sickness and heal any wound. |
Basilisk
The Basilisk was a terrifying beast of death, it's odor, voice, and even look can kill. It's odor is said to kill snakes, the fire coming from the Basilisk's mouth kills birds, and a single glance will kill a man. In legends, only a weasel can kill a Basilisk. The Basilisk is sometimes also called "The King of Snakes" The Basilisk was also known for it's venom, in fact, Legends claimed that anywhere that a Basilisk stepped is poisonous. If a man tried to kill it with a spear on horseback and succeeded. Then the poison in it's veins would leak on to the spear and poison not only the man but also the horse. There has never been a cure for Basilisk's poison. |
Caladrius
The Caladrius is a much less known mythical beast then the top two, however, it's still very similar to the unicorn. The Caladrius is a pure white bird that can tell whether a man will live or die. If the bird looks at you when your sick, it shall take your disease and fly it to the sun where the sickness will burn up. However, if the Caladrius does not look at you, it means you'll die. The Caladrius also relates to parts of Christianity. The Caladrius represents Christ, who is pure without a trace of sin. Christ will only cleanse those that believe in him, and turn away from those that do not believe, just like a Caladrius. |
